Steel and timber house

Project details

  • Location: Glenbrook, NSW
  • Client: Blue Eco Homes (Builder)
  • Project Challenge: Structural design constrained by restrictions on materials available to construct with.

Blue Eco Homes came to us with an unusual set of criteria for this new residential home build in Glenbrook. Their client had an architecturally designed home to be constructed with large internal open spaces including an asymmetric single storey high pitched roof highlight windows. A Sydney engineer had already completed the structural design which utilised a steel frame and bracing elements but the client was concerned about the effect that the steel would have on her wellbeing in her new house. She also stipulated that the design needed to avoid the use of glues used in engineered timber products which limited the available construction materials to traditional timber framing and lightweight strap bracing. Ascent successfully redesigned the house within these constraints, allowing the Builder to complete the new home well under budget.
