- Location: Nundle, NSW
- Client: Alexander Symes (Architect) and Blue Eco Homes (Builder)
- Project Challenge: Slender steel roof and column elements and lateral bracing were the main challenges on this new house.
The modern design of this house is juxtaposed by the rural setting just outside Nundle, NSW. The original architectural concept was for the house to have the appearance of an up turned Akubra hat and the lightweight exposed steel roof that appears to float over the main house reflects that concept. The Ascent structural designers needed to minimise the visual effect of the structural steel. This was complicated by large wrap around windows and full height doors meaning that the perimeter walls had a distinct lack of bracing capacity. Consulting closely with the builder to ensure the design was practical, Ascent designed the bracing for the whole building to be taken through an internal exposed concrete core. These walls were constructed from a proprietary concrete formwork product which both provides a modern rustic look and the required bracing capacity. The construction of this project will be finalised in mid 2019.
