- Location: Blackheath, NSW
- Client: TRIAS Studio (Architect)
- Project Challenge: Lightweight attic conversion with suspended “floating” steel staircase.
The architect had some very particular requirements for the new staircase on this attic conversion project. A concrete plinth leads to steel stairs that were suspended off the roof and floor above meaning that no element in the staircase had cross sectional dimensions greater than 25mm. Ascent conducted a computer model of the architect’s original stair concept and determined that due to the resonant frequency being close to that of a person’s rate of foot fall when descending a stairway it was likely that there would be an unacceptable amount of lateral movement while using the stairs. Using this first model as a reference Ascent worked with the architect to develop the concept that was constructed. The effect? Well you can see for yourself!
